Using Cite While You Write

The Cite While You Write plugin allows communication between EndNote and Microsoft Word. Download it from myendnoteweb.com > Downloads. Once the plugin is installed, EndNote commands will appear in Word.

Before inserting citations into your Word document, ensure that the references you want to cite are saved in your EndNote library.

1. Start typing your document. Place the cursor where you would like to insert a citation.
2. Click on the Insert Citation command in the EndNote toolbar. This will open a connection to your EndNote library. You may be prompted to log in to your EndNote Online account. NOTE: You may be automatically linked to your EndNote Desktop library. To switch to your EndNote Online library. locate the Preferences button in the toolbar. Click Application and select EndNote online from the drop-down menu.
3. Enter a term in the search box to find the desired citation(s). Select the citations(s) you want to insert, then click Insert. 
4. EndNote will insert the citation in the document and start building your references at the end of the document. The references may appear in a generic format.
5. To change the citation style, locate the Style drop-down menu. You can choose from various styles for your in-text citations and reference list (e.g., APA 7th, JAMA, Vancouver, etc.). NOTE: For additional bibliographical styles, you will need to add them to your favorites. Refer to Adding Bibliographic Styles to Favorites for instructions.
6. Continue writing your document and inserting citations.
