Extensions: Not Just for Flexions!

This is a non-exhaustive list of Chrome browser extensions that your librarians have found useful. As a general rule, we try to keep our browsers un-cluttered so they don't slow us down. But these extensions are worth trying out!

But first: to add an extension to your Chrome browser:

  1. Open up the webstore in Chrome--incognito or guest mode won't work.
  2. Search for the extension you want to try.
  3. Select the the option to Add to Chrome.
  4. To use the extension, click the icon to the address bar! It's in the upper right hand corner of your browser. (See below.)

Extensions we love:

  • LibKey Nomad
    • Active at most common research sites, including PubMed, Wikipedia, publisher pages, etc.
    • Finds pdfs for you based on your library's access.
    • Will find Open Access versions when possible.
    • See our instructions to set-uphttps://bit.ly/30uxoVJ
    • Also available in Firefox now
  • Kopernio
    • Brought to you by Web of Science
    • Easy pdf access to millions of papers hosted by them
    • Plays nice with EndNote, Dropbox, and Zotero
    • See our instructions to set-up:https://bit.ly/3nxLlMt
  • Dualless
    • Don't have two monitors? Working in the library on your laptop?
    • Splits your browser windows into two 'screens' with two clicks.
    • Watch a lecture on one side while taking notes in the other side seamlessly.
  • Google Translate / Dictionary
    • Listen sometimes the evil tech empires make useful things and these are useful as heck.
    • When using, you can highlight to define or translate specific words.
    • Will save a history of words that you've looked up so you can review or practice them later!
  • Remember the Milk
    • Tried and true productivity app.
    • Add from your browser with extension.
    • The free version isn't fancy, but it's a workhouse.
  • Zotero Connector
    • You know we weren't going to make an extension list without Zotero.
    • One click to download bibliographic information AND all available full text pdfs.
    • Find more about Zotero's power.

We always welcome more suggestions so please don't hesitate to let us know at hslinfo@hawaii.edu!
