Open Access 2024: Community over Commercialization

by Lara Gamboa on 2024-10-21T08:30:00-10:00 | 0 Comments

This year's Open Access Week 2024 theme is "Community over Commercialization," continuing on last year's theme.

"This year’s theme continues the call to put 'Community over Commercialization' and prioritize approaches to open scholarship that serve the best interests of the public and the academic community."

-International Open Access Week 2024

What is open access?

Open Access (OA) literature has many advantages for people in search of information:

  • Access to research and increased impact (more opportunities for your work to be viewed, cited, and shared)
  • New ideas can be dispersed more rapidly and widely, which in turn triggers new research studies; it serves as an impetus for knowledge.
  • Since open access also implies wider reuse, recent knowledge can be put to immediate use in teaching as an "open educational resource".

To name a few.

A study that looked at OA and non-OA articles in the same multi-discipline journal found that "non-OA papers were twice as likely to remain uncited six months after publication when compared to OA articles. Additionally, the average number of citations for OA articles was more than double that of the non-OA articles." Would you like to be cited more? Do you want your work to be accessible without a paywall? There are two ways to make your work Open Access. One is to publish in an established OA journal. The other is self-archiving!

UH maintains an online OA repository called ScholarSpace. Self-archiving your research increases the visibility of your work by making works discoverable in Google Scholar!
