As flu season kicks into gear, we want to remind you that National Influenza Vaccination Week (December 2-6) is the perfect time to get your flu shot! We want to support the health and well-being of our students, staff, and faculty, so we're excited to share why getting vaccinated is so important, especially in a community like ours.
Flu season is no joke. It can spread quickly through schools, hospitals, and communities, putting everyone at risk—especially those with weakened immune systems. Vaccination is one of the best ways to protect yourself, your classmates, and your loved ones. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends getting the flu shot yearly, and for good reason! The vaccine helps reduce your chances of getting the flu; even if you catch it, it can make symptoms less severe.
As medical students and professionals, we know how important it is to lead by example. By getting vaccinated, we protect ourselves and contribute to the safety of those around us—whether in the classroom, clinic, or library!
Protects you and others: Reduces your risk of getting the flu and spreading it to others.
Reduces the severity of illness: Even if you do get sick, the vaccine can make symptoms milder.
Helps prevent complications: The flu can lead to serious complications, especially for people with chronic conditions, young children, and older adults.
Supports the healthcare system: We help prevent overwhelming hospitals and clinics during peak flu season by reducing flu cases.
We know you're busy, but don't let that stop you from getting vaccinated. Many local pharmacies and health centers offer flu shots, and some may even offer them for free.

There's a lot of misinformation out there about the flu vaccine, so let's bust some myths:
Myth: "The flu shot can give you the flu." Fact: The flu vaccine contains inactivated virus, so it can't give you the flu. Some people may experience mild side effects like soreness or fatigue, but that's not the flu!
Myth: "I'm healthy. I don't need the vaccine." Fact: Even healthy people can get the flu and spread it. The vaccine helps protect those who may be more vulnerable, like patients with chronic illnesses.
Myth: "The flu isn't that serious." Fact: While most people recover from the flu, it can cause serious complications, particularly for those with underlying health conditions.
National Influenza Vaccination Week is a great reminder to prioritize your health and the health of others. We encourage you to make getting your flu shot part of your routine this season. Plus, it's a quick and easy way to do your part in keeping the community safe and healthy.
Stay healthy, stay informed, and remember to get your flu shot!
