Unlock Your Data Skills: Join Us for a Data Carpentry Workshop!

by Lara Gamboa on 2024-10-14T08:30:00-10:00 | 0 Comments

Get ready to elevate your research skills at our upcoming Data Carpentry Workshop on October 24-25! This two-day, in-person event is designed to provide researchers with essential computing skills through hands-on, practical exercises. Whether new to this or looking to enhance your skills, this workshop is perfect for you.

What the workshop covers

This workshop uses a tabular ecology dataset from the Portal Project Teaching Database and teaches data cleaning, management, analysis, and visualization. There are no prerequisites, and the materials assume no prior knowledge about the tools. We use a single dataset throughout the workshop to model the data management and analysis workflow that a researcher would use.

All workshops start with a lesson on organizing data effectively in spreadsheets, followed by a lesson on data cleaning with OpenRefine.  Python lessons focus on data import, exploratory data analysis, and visualization. Workshops also include a lesson on using SQL to work with data in a relational database.

Why You Should Attend

In today's data-rich world, managing and analyzing large datasets is crucial. Despite the vast data available, many researchers struggle to leverage this information effectively due to a lack of training. This workshop addresses that gap, helping you build foundational data organization, management, and analysis skills.

During the workshop, you can expect:

  • Interactive Learning: Short tutorials paired with hands-on exercises.
  • Practical Application: Opportunities to apply new techniques to your own research problems.
  • Collaborative Environment: Engage with fellow participants to share knowledge and insights.

About Data Carpentry

Data Carpentry, a part of The Carpentries, focuses on fundamental data skills necessary for effective research across various disciplines. Since merging with Software Carpentry in 2018, they have been committed to delivering high-quality, domain-specific training covering the entire data-driven research lifecycle. Their workshops are tailored for researchers with little to no prior computational experience, creating a friendly and supportive learning environment. Using real scientific questions and data relevant to participants' fields empowers learners to see immediate value in their new skills.
