Getting Started

The library provides lots of information on clinical medicine and public health. The hard part is figuring out where to start and how to find it!  Here are some helpful hints:

General/background knowledge

  • Common issue (what causes osteoarthritis?) - use a book listed in this guide or go directly to ClinicalKey and AccessMedicine. Or search for a book using OneSearch
  • Rare issue (what causes rat lungworm disease?) - can try textbooks first but probably need to search PubMed

Something more specific (behavioral/populational knowledge, emerging areas, managing a disease or care)

  • Populational and behavioral LI's (trying to explain human behavior) - try an interdisciplinary database (OneSearch - good, PsycINFO or EBSCO might be better)
  • Data and statistics, prevalence - try a Google search limiting to .gov websites
  • Emerging treatments or co-morbidities - try searching databases like PubMed or Cochrane
