Library Digitization Projects

Though a special exception in copyright law (Section 108 of the copyright code), libraries can digitize media on deteriorating or obsolete formats as long as the access remains the same.

The University of Hawaii at Manoa Library has been digitizing obsolete and deteriorating media and making it available online to faculty, staff, and students of the University. Our focus has been on Hawaiian and Pacific Region titles, including audio and video recordings.

Also, when granted permission from copyright holders, the library has been recording television program relating to Hawaiian topics off the air and adding these programs to our catalog for the purpose of research and preservation.

In addition to the materials above, the Library also subscribes to streaming video and music packages (e.g. Films on Demand) and individual streaming videos (e.g. Act of War).
